Personal

Yesterday, tweaking the DTH dish after a heavy downpour in Pondy, I happened to lisen to a tune very reminiscent of the 'Good Times, Bad Times' Video featured on Windows 95 to demonstrate the multimedia capablities of the OS.
(if you are here looking for a copy, Click to Grab it!)

Brother Shyam has a CD with the old OS versions starting with Win95. I quickly grabbed that CD from a huge stash of disks and ran it to find the video which brought back nostalgic evocative memories.... I can clearly remember the day when 95 was released. It was a huge hoopala in the Market and soon, within days, pirated Win95 diskettes started appearing on the streets.

My 386 with 32Mb RAM was running Windows 3.11 Workgroup at that time. Mate Suranjaya from Lanka first got hold of a bunch of diskettes and soon the night passed away trying to install the 95 on his own Acer 386. Three diskettes proved faulty and we finally fell asleep at 5 in the morning without even a glimse of the OS.

The next day took me to Anatomy Class and on the way back, we were excited by the news that VasudevaVamadeva, another enterprising Lankan now has a faultless installation already on his Comp!

Running from the Metro, we soon reached Vasu's room.

Belhold, Heavens open!

On the desk in the corner, stood the great monitor. On it was Windows 95's historical screensaver! Flying Windows!! Thousands of them... Wow!

Vasu stirred the mouse and the Screensaver dissapeared to show us the 'Rover' game Vasu was playing some moments ago!
In the Background was a copy dialogue with files FLYING from one folder to another. A Sight to watch.

Vasu was copying some of the Win95 Diskettes to the HDD.

Later that evening, a Diskette set cradled carefully in my arms, I ran up the stairs to my own room.
Excited beyond belief, skipped supper, sleep and clad yet in outdoor clothing, I spent another sleepless night, Anatomy class tomorrow be damned, installing the 95.

Five days of intense and passionate love affair with 95 was graced on a particular friday by my efforts to run the 'Good Times' video. The frames skipped, froze and seemed to howl under the crawl of my video card and processor.

To watch this video in full was a goal then. AVI's were hard to come by and for almost a quarter of a year, I had just this one video to watch on the monitor. So it ran and ran, again and again, till the sounds got etched on my liver for ever.

Today, I watched that video and got all sentimental. We may hate M$ for all its worth, but surely, we did have goodtimes courtesy Gates.

Good Times was by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
The Lyrics are as follows:

You don't even have to try,
it comes easy for you
The way you move is so appealing
it could make me cry
Go out driving with my friends
in Bobby's big old beat-up car
I'm with a lot of people there,
I wonder where you are
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
I don't want to say goodbye,
don't wanna walk you to the door
I've spent a little time with you,
I want a little more
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
(unintelligible male spoken part)
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
Good times, bad times, gimme some of that
Now I've got those good, good ,good times ???
Ain't got those bad, bad, bad times ???
I've got those good, good, good ,good times ???
